Ela Mergels, Künstlerin und Designerin

Ela Mergels, 1969 in Deutschland geboren, lebt und arbeitet in Köln.
Die Künstlerin und Designerin studierte in Dortmund und Rotterdam Fotografie und Film.

Die Foto- und Filmdesignerin mit künstlerischem Hintergrund arbeitet seit 2002 als Design-Beraterin, Art Direktorin, Fotografin, Motion-Designerin und Kommunikations-Designerin für große und kleine Kunden aus unterschiedlichsten Branchen – darunter Kultur und Kommunen, Mode und Musik, Energie, Fernsehen und Telekommunikation.

In ihren künstlerischen Arbeiten beschäftigt sie sich mit dem Mensch-Sein und seinen Lebensformen.
Bezugnehmend auf Architektur, Werbung, Mode und der Auseinandersetzung mit Mythologien, Politik, Soziologie, Philosophie und Psychologie entstehen inhaltlich tief gehende Arbeiten, die mit moderner Bildsprache der Fotografie oder des Videos umgesetzt werden.

Ihre Arbeiten waren in zahlreichen Ausstellungen zu sehen. U.a. artothek / Köln, Haus der Kunst / München, transmediale / Berlin und Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA DC / Washington, Contemporary Art Ruhr / Essen Zollverein, Wormland, art collection, deutschlandweit, Istanbul Biennale 2019 und während der artweek Miami 2023.

Des weiteren erschien ihre Publikation „walking in between“, ein Fotoband zum Thema transgender.
2022 veröffentlichte sie das Fotobuch BEYOND BORDERS und lancierte 2023 das gleichnamige Upcycled Fashion Label.

Gegen die aktuelle gesellschaftliche Polarisierung und den stärker werdenden Nationalismus startete
die Kölner Künstlerin Ela Mergels 2015 ihr Projekt „BEYOND BORDERS“. A SMALL WORLD ART & FASHION PROJECT
SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION.
Ihre analoge Kamera reist um die Welt, immer mit einem Freund zu einem Einheimischen. Dieser hat die Aufgabe, das zu fotografieren, was ihm / ihr im Leben wichtig ist. Nach der Rückkehr der Kamera wird der Film zurückgespult und für die nächste Reise ein zweites Mal eingelegt.
So erzählen zwei Fremde gemeinsam durch Doppelbelichtungen eine neue Geschichte. Das Projekt basiert auf dem „Kleine Welt Prinzip“.

Ela Mergels, born in Germany in 1969, lives and works in Cologne.
The artist and designer studied photography and film in Dortmund and Rotterdam.

Since 2002, the photo and film designer with an artistic background has been working as a design consultant, art director, photographer, motion designer, and communication designer for both large and small clients across various industries — including culture and municipalities, fashion and music, energy, television, and telecommunications.

In her artistic work, she explores the human condition and its ways of life.
Drawing from architecture, advertising, fashion, and engaging with mythology, politics, sociology, philosophy, and psychology, she creates profound, content-rich works expressed through the modern visual language of photography or video.

Her works have been exhibited in numerous shows, including at artothek / Cologne, Haus der Kunst / Munich, transmediale / Berlin, the Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA DC / Washington, Contemporary Art Ruhr / Essen Zollverein, Wormland, art collection (nationwide in Germany), Istanbul Biennale 2019, and during Art Week Miami 2023.

She also published “walking in between”, a photo book on the topic of transgender identity.
In 2022, she released the photo book BEYOND BORDERS and launched the upcycled fashion label of the same name in 2023.

In response to current social polarization and the growing rise of nationalism, the Cologne-based artist Ela Mergels initiated her project “BEYOND BORDERS. A SMALL WORLD ART & FASHION PROJECT – SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION” in 2015.
Her analog camera travels the world — always handed from a friend to a local person. That person is asked to photograph what is important to them in life. When the camera returns, the film is rewound and reloaded for the next trip.
In this way, two strangers tell a new story together through double exposures. The project is based on the "small world phenomenon."
