Kate Dawson, Art & Brand Manager

"Kunst bewegt mich.

"Art moves me. What interests me is what makes it possible: the ideas behind it, the decisions, the people and structures. How something comes into being, finds its place, and continues to resonate across space and time.
I studied Art History and Business Administration at Freie Universität Berlin, as well as at Trinity College Dublin. My work with and for the archive of Rosemarie Trockel at Sprüth Magers was particularly formative, before I joined Monopol Magazin in 2023. Today, I work at the publishing house as Art & Brand Manager, where I am responsible for our editions and the Monopol brand. I develop projects in collaboration with artists and explore what forms and structures cultural ideas need in order to remain relevant over time.
I was born and raised in the south of Cologne. I am half-Irish, and Ireland has always been an integral part of my life. I spent every Easter there growing up. What has stayed with me is a sense of autonomy and belonging. The smell of a fireplace or a pub, tea and carpets. A deep connection to nature and music. Damp air, water, openness and the horizon. Different shades of green, grey and blue, and the textures of surfaces. Salt, hills, stones, grass and seaweed. Cows and horses. Warmth, humour and melancholy.
Yorkshire Tea with milk in the morning was also part of my childhood and that of my stepsisters. Yorkshire is where my stepfather is from. Today, I understand how much his way of living shaped me and strengthened my trust in life: accepting things as they come, while still standing up for what matters. My mother’s confidence and independence taught me that I can be whoever I want to be. To me, this means being able to see different perspectives while still finding my own position. Perhaps it is this combination of trust, independence and the courage to follow my own path that connects me to KAFD: having the conviction to take a stand, remaining open to change, and taking responsibility for what we can shape together.
With our new home at the Barbican Centre in London and my scholarship for a Master’s in Innovation Management at the University of the Arts London, Central Saint Martins, a new chapter is beginning. It is an opportunity to broaden my perspective and engage with what lies ahead: what has been, what is to come, and especially what I can only partially control. Art history gives me a perspective on the past. Innovation gives me one on the future. What emerges between the two is my present — and the potential to shape it."
